The only areas that don't require oiling are the gears and pinions. Once the clock movements are completely dry, turn the hairdryer off.ĥ Apply a thin layer of clock oil to all movements inside the clock, including the pivots. Slowly move the hairdryer around the back of the clock, using the low heat to dry the clock movements. ![]() Check the clock movements carefully for any spots you may have missed.Ĥ Direct a hairdryer at the back of the clock and turn it to the lowest setting. Wipe down the springs with warm water, knocking loose any dust or debris stuck on these areas. Unwind the springs inside the clock with an un-winder. Wipe the interior clock movements a second time with the paintbrush and more rubbing alcohol, making sure you clean all areas.ģ Rub the alcohol-soaked brush over the wheels and pinions. The rubbing alcohol completely cleans the clock movements, and then naturally evaporates. Also when cleaning the movement the gummy oils can build up inside the coils of the mainsprings making them stick causing them not to function properly they are what powers the pendulum so they may need a good cleaning as well for best results clean them when fully run down so you can get inside the coils. As a clock ages the oils and lubricants become gummy and the pendulum starts slowing down and then finally come to a stop or it may become dry and the same problem may happen. You made sure it is free of dibris but have you cleaned and reoiled the movement? this should be done every 3 to 5 years. ![]() The next thing to check is the pendulum assembly make sure from the suspension spring on down is tight nothing loose or bent or out of align. First make sure it is flat against the wall you already leveled it both ways front to back and side to side. I believe Centurion made 31 & 35 day wall clocks.
